Module WS-X6348-RJ-45 resets frequently with the "%SYS-5-MOD_OK: Module [dec] is online" error message in a Catalyst 6000 switch that runs CatOS version

Core issue

This message indicates that the module passed the diagnostic self-test and is online. [dec] is the module number.

You are experiencing a silent reload on the line card. A silent reload occurs when a line card experiences a CPU exception and resets. This is usually seen by a "module up" in the logging buffer with no indication the line card went down. You can also look at the show log command to see uptime for this module.

This problem is observed in the following Cat 6000 modules, which reset at random times:

  • WS-X6348-RJ-45
  • WS-X6248-RJ-45
  • WS-X6248-TELCO
  • WS-X6348-RJ-21
  • WS-X6148-RJ-21
  • WS-X6324-100FX-MM

The reset occurs at unpredictable times.

This problem is documented in Cisco bug ID CSCeb35612.

You may see this error message in the output of the show logging buffer command:

2003 Apr 29 05:48:54 GST +04:00 %SYS-5-MOD_OK:Module 4 is online

If you see only this message and no other messages indicating why the line card reset (and this is a WS-X6348 line card), then this is an
indication that the line card has experienced a silent reload.

To resolve this issue, upgrade the Catalyst (CatOS) on the Supervisor to 6.4(6) or later, which can be downloaded from Catalyst 6500/6000 CatOS System Software.
