The %MCAST-4-RX_JNRANGE: IGMP: Rcvd Report in the range 01-00-5e-00-00-xx message is logged due to invalid multicast packets being received

Core issue

This message is logged because of multicast reports sent to a reserved multicast address.

Resolution

A Catalyst switch may display this message due to an application sending multicast packets to a reserved destination address.

The range 01-00-5e-00-00-xx is the MAC-layer equivalent of the globally scoped multicast address range at Layer 3 (L3). The range of addresses between 224.0.0.0 and 224.0.0.255, inclusive, is reserved for the use of routing protocols and other low-level topology discovery or maintenance protocols. This should not forward any multicast datagram with destination addresses in that range, regardless of its Time To Live (TTL).

To resolve this issue, perform these steps:

  1. Locate the device sending the reserved destination address packets by using a packet capture tool (like a sniffer) and filter Interior Gateway Management Protocol (IGMP) messages.
  2. Copy packets from a source port to a destination port, where you then attach the sniffer. This is done by using the Switched Port Analyzer (SPAN) feature.

For more information on the SPAN feature, refer to Configuring the Catalyst Switched Port Analyzer (SPAN) Feature.

  3. If you are not using the IGMP feature, you can set IGMP to disable. This is done by issuing the set igmp command. This stops the error message.

    disable
  4. Set the logging level for multicast by issuing the set logging level command. This also stops the message. Otherwise, suppressing the messages does not resolve the underlying issue. mcast 2 default
