The NVRAM Verification Failed or "startup-config file open failed (No such device)" error message appears in Cisco Catalyst switches that run the Cisco IOS system software

Core issue

The NVRAM Verification Failed error message shows up when you try to save the configuration file with the use of the write memory command or any other command which involves nonvolatile RAM (NVRAM).

The issue is possibly due to hardware failure of NVRAM, and NVRAM is not a field replaceable unit (FRU).

Resolution

You can try this workaround:

  1. First take a backup of the running-config to a TFTP server.

  2. Use the erase startup-config: command in order to erase the startup-config file from the NVRAM.

  3. Use the copy running-config startup-config command in order to save the running-config into the NVRAM.

Note: If something fails, you can download the configs from the tftp server as startup config.

For information on how to upload the running configuration or a configuration file stored on the Flash device of a Catalyst switch to a TFTP server, refer to articleHow to upload the running configuration or a configuration file stored on the Flash device of a Catalyst switch to a TFTP server.
