Unable to access the Catalyst 3750 switch stack with the Secure Shell login

Core issue

Scenario 1: During the attempt to connect with the use of a Secure Shell (SSH) access into the switch, the prompt for password shows up and the login fails. The HTTP access work fine with that user name and password.

Scenario 2: When the 3750 switches are stacked together and when all 16 vty lines are configured with the transport input ssh command, then remote console access from slave switches does not work. This problem is seen in Cat3750 switches that run crypto software, in one of these software releases:

  • Cisco IOS  Software Release 12.1(14)EA1
  • Cisco IOS Software Release 12.1(19)EA1
  • Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(18)SE.

Cisco bug ID CSCee92279 identifies this issue.

Make sure the switch runs the crypto software image and the vty lines have been configured in order to use only SSH with the transport input ssh and line vty 0 15 global configuration commands.

Solution for Scenario 1 Configure this in order to remove the password:

Switch(config)#line vty 0 15
Switch(config-line)#no password
Switch(config-line)#login local
transport input ssh

Once you are done, use the username: swadmin and password 0 in order to login.

Note: Straight (non-SSH) Telnets are refused when you use the transport input ssh command and when you want to allow both SSH and Telnet access through the vty lines, use the transport input ssh telnet command.

Solution for Scenario 2 If the switch access is configured for only SSH, and the switch runs the software releases mentioned in the Scenario 2, then access the stack with only the console port on the master switch. Otherwise, you can upgrade to Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(25)SE and later, which can be downloaded from Cisco Downloads.
