Unable to configure the high availability option on 802.1X enabled port in Catalyst 6500 series switches that run CatOS

Core issue

The inability to enable high availability, which is the advanced supervisor redundancy feature, is caused by 802.1x when it is globally enabled.

Resolution

When you attempt to configure high availability, a message similar to this can occur:

Cat6509> (enable) set system highavailability enable

Failed to enable system high availability.

Feature not allowed while DOT1X is enabled.

Dot1x must be disabled in order for high availability to work.

If you simply clear the dot1x config, this does not disable high availability, as shown in this example:

Cat6509> (enable) clear dot1x config

The clear dot1x config command disables dot1x on all ports and resets dot1x parameter values back to factory defaults, as shown in this example:

Do you want to continue (y/n) [n]? y

Dot1x config cleared.

Cat6509> (enable) set system highavailability enable

Failed to enable system high availability.

Feature not allowed while DOT1X is enabled.

Cat6509> (enable)

If you clear the dot1x config , this does not allow high availability to be enabled because dot1x is enabled globally.

In order to disable dot1x, issue the set dot1x system-auth-control disable command.

After this is done, high availability can be enabled when you issue the set system highavailability enable command.

Refer to Configuring 802.1X Authentication for more information on Catalyst 6500 series switches.
