6509 flash memory upgrade

I know how much memory my 6509 has: 64MB

I know how much memory my 6509 needs: 128MB

I need to know if i have the available slots to install 64MB more memory without powering the thing down. I have no backup supervisor engine.

How can I find out without taking the unit down?

you cannot upgrade memory in the 6509 with only one supervisor without causing down time.

to upgrade the switch memory, you'll need to pull the supervisor and either add new memory or replace existing memory.

this will cause an outage, no way around it.

NOTE: the type/amount of memory your supervisor can support is dependent on the model of supervisor you are using.

I realize that the memory upgrade will cause downtime. I was wondering if I could find out if the memory slots are occupied or free without downtime. Please excuse my lack of clarity.

I have a WS-SUP720, and I have reviewed the data sheet on it: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/modules/ps2797/products_data_sheet09186a0080159856.html

However, from this document, I can't gather how many memory slots are available for my sup-bootflash: directory. 64MB are provided for SP bootflash and 64MB for RP bootflash. The IOS image I need for crypto ip services is ~72 MB. You know how you can look at the BIOS on a PC or Server to determine which memory slots are occupied? I was looking for something like that.

Based on this, I assume there are only two DRAM DIMM slots, and both are occupied (One 64MB module in each slot). Am I correct to assume this? Basically, I need to know how many memory modules to order and what size they should be. Based on what I have read, I THINK I should get two 128MB modules.

For anyone having the same problem, the SUP720 has exactly one DIMM slot for the SP and one DIMM slot for the RP. The image for both apparently is stored in the SP, so an upgrade to the SP is all that is needed. However, speaking with a cisco technician, I have been told that there is no 128MB upgrade, so you have jump to the 512MB CompactFlash card which is included in a kit that has an adapter that inserts into the SP's DIMM slot on the SUP720 board.
