I was wondering what the best method is to determine how much bandwidth to throw at something. I have department that regularly xfers 100Mb+ files between offices and with the current infrastructure they complain about slow response.

Hi Anthony

This can be only done based on the kinda monitoring you do on the actual bandwidth usage in peak hours(during file transfers) and the average usage.

You can collect the required datas using NMS tools such as MRTG/PRTG etc.,

These tools can give you a fair idea on how much bandwidth you would require between the locations..

Based on the study you can size your bandwidth between your locations..

Thanks for the reply. Right now the sites have bonded T1s that are totally saturated by the Eng team as well as other folks who work in that office. I'm going to order new circuits for each office that needs them and get rid of the T1s. I'm not sure if I should just order 45Mb or something smaller. I guess what I'm trying to ask is to xfer 100Mb files in a timely manner would 10Mb be enough. Is there a formula out there that states at 10Mb a 100Mb file will take 1hr or something like that.

This is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks very much for all your help.
