Cisco Wireless Lan Manager

I'm fairly new with getting cisco AP and 4400 working together.

I inherit a network of 100 cisco access points and a wireless lan manager. The network needs to be updated with a new subnet. However, each AP has a static ip address.

Can you provide any suggestions as far:

1) how to change all the APs to new subnet address

2) how to configure the wireless lan manager to work with the APs?

What do you mean by Cisco Wireless Lan Manager? Wireless Control System (WCS) ? Wireless Lan Control System (WLSE)? the 4400 Wireless Lan Controller UI?

In any case, you can change individually the ip addresses of the access points from the WLC GUI, the WCS but there is no easy way to change it as a bundle.

In WLC UI: go to Wireless -> Access Points -> All APs. Click on the AP in question and in IP Config, uncheck static IP.

WCS : Configure -> Access Point. Click on the AP and change the IP.

I dont see a way to change this in a template for all the APs simultaneously on the software.

I suggest is to use the CLI on the WLC with the command :

(Cisco Controller) >config ap static-IP disable .

You can list all your aps in a file and then paste the output on the CLI of the WLC :

config ap static-IP disable AP1

yes

config ap static-IP disable AP2

yes

....

Be aware that your APs will reboot after entering this command.

If it is the WLC, what firmware are you running? 5.2.157.0 firmware does NOT like static AP IP Address. You can put the static IP Address in BUT the AP's will have a different IP Address.

If you want to keep static-IP and move it, you can have the following command line script to paste in your WLC :

config ap static-IP enable ' '

yes

This will also reboot the AP as there is an IP address change.

Regardless of the code of WLC, check the release notes for open defects :

Hello,

I'm running version 3.2.150.10 on my Wireles Lan Controller.

Two questions...

1) Do I need both a wireless lan manager and the wireless controller?

2) When I reset the APs, they do not connect to my Wireless Lan Controller. What kind of configuration needs to go into Wireless Lan Controller and if there is something wrong?

1) depends what you are trying to achieve. The manager is optional for the wireless network to work.

2)You can configure lwapp manually or do some lwapp troubleshooting

I'm trying to manage all the APs using the Cisco WLC 4400X. However, the access points are not associated to the WLC.

for got to mention the access points do not understand the command lwapp.

Hi Pedro,

The "lwapp" enable command is disabled if the AP is running on the LWAP image. In enable mode, check if you have two IOS in the AP: one for LWAP and the rcovery image ("RCV" in the filename). If there is, you can delete the LWAP image (delete /f /r flash:) and allow the AP to boot into the RCV image before trying the "lwapp" enable command.

What are your AP's models? Firmware 3.X will NOT support 1140 & 1250 APs.

I have to take a look at the firmware of the APs. As far the firmaware question, you have, I just inherited a network already establish with a lots of Cisco 1220 APs.

Yes, I also noticed there are two type of software loaded on the APs.

How do I upgrade the firmware?

Have a read of the link above. Take special attention to Table 8-1 Upgrade Path. Before you do any upgrade, I recommend the following:

1. I will not recommend any version for you to upgrade to. This is your choice.

2. When choosing the version of your choice, read the Release Notes.

3. I recommend that you upgrade the Bootstrap FIRST. Bootstrap has the suffix -ER in the filename and contains patches and fixes not associated to the firmware.
