Ciscoworks same-server upgrade.

Hi,

We are still using LMS 2.5 but just received from Cisco LMS 3.1. I'm now working on a plan to perform a same-server upgrade.

Our current platform is:

- Sun Server V240

- 2 Sparc IIIi

- 4 GB RAM

- 2x 36GB (Raid 1) local disks, plus 200 GB SAN

- Solaris 8

- LMS 2.5

THe idea is to perform backup of the CW databases, re-image the server with Solaris 10, install LMS 3.1 and restore the CW databases previuosly backed up.

Are there any well-defined steps I should follow for the backup /restore of the CW databases?

Is a direct upgrade from 2.5 to 3.1 possible?

I have no idea how you've managed to live with LMS 2.5, because it sounds very buggy just based on the feedbacks around here. LMS 2.6 has many stability and bug fixes. I'd look to patch (I hesitate to use the word "upgrade") LMS 2.5 to 2.6 first, if only for the sake of a smoother migration to LMS 3.1.

Incidentally, Cisco's LMS 3.1 "Overview of LAN Management Solution 3.1" has this to say concerning LMS 2.5:

"Direct upgrade to LMS 3.1 is not supported. The suggested upgrade path is:

LMS 2.2 / LMS 2.5 / LMS 2.5.1 > LMS 2.6 > LMS 3.1"

And here's the LMS 3.1 Data Migration Guide that details the LMS 2.6 to 3.1 migration options. Since you're also upgrading to Sol 10, it's essentially a "remote migration" except on the same box:

After settling in with LMS 3.1, you might encounter several or more of these bugs, depending on how LMS is used in your environment. The recommended approach is to patch for the ones you actually encounter.
