Display name reverts back to ip address after logging off.

Joe,

It appeared that the Display name was was changed in device properties, however when I logged off and out of Cisco Works everything reverted back to the display name of xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.

All the devices retained the credentials, now everthing is green but no modified display names.

There is no way a logout would have an effect on DCR.  Are you sure nothing else (e.g. Discovery) is running between the time you logout, then log back on?  You might also check the DCR audit log under Common Services > Device and Credentials > Reports to see if any of these changes show up here.
