how can I configure SNMP v2 or 3 on Cisco router - 3800, 2600, etc.
I am trying to implememnt or turn on SNMP v2 or v3 on my cisco routers, switches and Firewalls for security reasons but don't know how to do this and I have not done this or seen this to be done inthe past.
any help, insight into this is greatly appreciated. would Ciscoworks LMS and VMS support the secure versions of SNMP?
right now, when I capture some packets and look at the payload I can see th ecommunity string that I have defined and this poses a real danger.
Other such links exist for PIX OS. However, the PIX only supports SNMPv1.
As for whether or not to use SNMPv3, there are some caveats to be aware of. Currently, LMS 2.6 and CSM 3.0 only support SNMPv3 authNoPriv (for devices that support v3). This does NOT offer payload encryption, but it will not pass the SNMPv3 user password in clear text.
I encourage you to read through some of the other threads on this forum, as v3 with LMS has been discussed on numerous occasions.
This is actually a pretty cool feature, i didn't even know it existed until I was looking for a solution to advertise a subnet (prefix in BGP talk), only if a certain condition existed. This is exactly what conditional advertisements does
