Re: HOW TO CONFIGURE SYSLOG SERVER

Hi Leandro.

Here's some information I dug-up that I think will be helpful to you:

Syslog is a method to collect messages from devices to a server running a Syslog

daemon. Logging to a central Syslog server helps in aggregation of logs and alerts. A SYSLOG service simply accepts messages, and stores them in files or prints them according to a simple configuration file. This form of logging is the best available for Cisco devices because it can provide protected long-term storage for logs. This is useful both in routine troubleshooting and in incident handling.

Here is an URL with information regarding to Logging Syslog Messages:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/netmgtsw/ps411/products_user_guide09186a00800e6e5f.html

Syntax in the router to Logging syslog Messages:

logging #.#.#.# (where #.#.#.# is the syslog server's address)

logging facility local# (where local# is the logging facility - the 'where')

logging trap (level is the 'what')

Valid logging facilities are local0 through local7.

Valid levels can be:

emergency

alert

critical

error

warning

notification

informational

debug

Now, a Syslog server will work with any device that sends Syslog messages on UDP or TCP. Since the program only logs what it receives and doesn't parse or interpret the log files, it will work with any message format. Also, a Syslog server can handle 100 messages per second, so I think you can

install as many routers as you need. Here are two options:

Kiwi Syslog Deamon:

http://www.kiwisyslog.com/products.htm

SolarWinds:

http://www.solarwinds.net/Tools/Network_Monitoring/Syslog/

Install the program in the computer, make sure you are able to ping the Syslog server from the routers.

HTH,
