Is there a resource which lists invalid (at least from a cisco perspective) SNMP characters ? I know from the school of hard knocks that ! and @ are bad juju.

The only universally bad character in an SNMP community string for Cisco devices is '@'. All others should be okay, unless specifically documented otherwise in that device's configuration guide. For IOS and CatOS devices, you should only need to avoid '@'.
