IP addressing

When setting up ip addressing with subnetting, what address does the ethernet connection to the router get? For example: The subnet is 192.168.18.0/24, Would Fa0/0 be 192.168.18.1 ?  And would that be the Default Gateway?  Finally, would that also be the first host address or would that be .2  ?

Any help is much appreciated,  Frank.

.1 is commonly used as the router / default gateway address. It doesn't have to be though - it's just a (very) common practice.

Hosts can be any unique usable address in the subnet. Some folks start off with .2; others like to give themselves some reserved addresses for future network devices so start the host numbering at .5 or .10 (up through .254 in a /24 subnet).

It's useful thinking/troubleshhoting-wise to have some reserved addresses together for things like a possible backup router, mgmt interfaces on the network equipment, etc.
