LAN and WAN Monitoring

Hi,

We have a 3rd party (EMC Smarts)Monitoring & Alarming tool for LAN and WAN network; however they charge us for each interface.For WAN (ATM) link, they count controllers, ATM interface, IMA and even AAL5 interface (which reports them thru SNMP).Can anyone help me to understand which interfaces could be removed with effecting alarming on link failure,thus reducing my charges. Thank You

It really depends on your monitoring requirements, but you could "take a picture" of what you get today with everything monitored over a set period of time, identify all type of interfaces that don't report an ifSpeed value via SNMP, then try stopping monitoring one type of these interfaces at a time over the same amount of time, see what you might miss by comparing the "new picture" against the original.
