LMS 4 Migration from Evaluation Mode

Hi Team

I have a LMS 4.2, The Server is running in Evaluation mode right now... So I´m going to Instal the new Licenses file on it.

The correct procedure that I have is:

To update to a new license from the Licensing page:

Step 1 Select Admin > System > License Management.

The License Information page displays the license name, license version,  status of the license, and the expiration date of the license.

Step 2 Click Update.

Step 3 Enter the path to the new license file in the License field, or click Browse to locate the new file.

Step 4 Click OK.

The system verifies whether the license file is valid, and updates the  license. The updated licensing information appears in the License  Information page. Otherwise, an error message is displayed.

To return to the License Information page, click Cancel.

I need to known if before upload the new Licenses File, should I uninstall the Evaluation Licenses, someone told me that I need to clear out all the *.lic files ?  That´s correct if yes please let me known the procedure.

Cheers

LMS 4 Migration from Evaluation Mode

I've gotten the advice both ways from the TAC. I can confirm that I have a working LMS 4.2 installation with permanent licenses that did not clear out the evaluation licenses first. So I'm taking my second TAC answer as more authoritative.

If you need to remove old licenses, it's a bit complex - you need to go into the shell, navigate to the license directory, stop the LicenseServer daemon, remove or move the .lic file and put the new ones and and then restart the daemon.

The GUI should allow you to avoid all of that and it is not necessary to remove the old lic file(s).

You do need to ensure that the permanent licenses you are given are properly generated. The licensing team tool has had some issues with properly creating LMS licenses. If you open your permanent license in a text editor, make sure it specifies "LMS cisco 4.1 permanent" in the body (and NOT "LMS cisco 1.0 permanent"). The latter will be accepted by the GUI but not result in proper registration with the daemon.

Your system should indicate the status under Admin, System, License Management.

Something like this (click for larger view):

I'd not recommend deleting licenses from the shell command line unless you have a specific reason for doing so (i.e., recommended by TAC). It's too easy to mess things up when poking around in the file system.

Re: LMS 4 Migration from Evaluation Mode

Thanks Marvin

I tried to upload the LIC file but got the error:

" There is a mismatch detected between the device counts in LMS license  and Compliance Management license. Please refer to our Ordering Guide  for licensing recommendation."

Opened the LIC file and confirmed that is valid one

" VENDOR ciscoINCREMENT LMS cisco 4.1 permanent 300 ..."

Please advise how I can do the Upload

The compliance license doesn't need to be equivalent to the base license. That's just Cisco trying to encourage you to buy CM licenses. They're quite useful but not required.

Re: LMS 4 Migration from Evaluation Mode

Means The License has been uploaded? How I can delet from SSH just for information...

LMS 4 Migration from Evaluation Mode

Hey Marvin thanks for your help....

Last question there a way do see what is Eval Licenses and which one is the Purchased ?

From License Management page I see 700 licenses, and I uploaded 5 Lic files...

1 x LMS cisco 4.1 permanent 300

2 x LMS cisco 4.1 permanent 100

2 x LMS cisco 1.0 permanent 100 (Looks like those are wrong)

Just to make sure wich were validated properly.

If the status page says 700 with status of "purchased" than you are all validated.

It's curious that it took your "1.0" licenses. The one I just built last month (LMS 4.2 on a soft appliance) would not register those and I had to get TAC to re-issue.

Yes those Licenses were sent after a TAC Case, but I don´t know if were Validated, because I haven´t the last report..

When you uploaded did you get any error message?

Cheers

When I initially loaded licenses with the improper "1.0" string they didn't generate any error message - but the licensing screen didn't update to reflect the permanent license number having increased.

When I added lifecycle license only (not compliance) I did get the mismatch warning but I knew it was safe to ignore since my customer elected not to purchase compliance licenses. My lab server has equal numbers so no warning is given.
