Log files verification

Hi,

Please help me out by giving the in-detail information about the verification of log files(routers,switches and firewall).

1.What are log files, need to be verified in Cisco routers?

2. Syslog is same as log files?

3. How i can frame the syslog monitoring?

4. Please provide reference link or resources to get trained on those.
