Monitoring of NX5600 (5672UP) - DCNM 6.3

Hi,

We have NX5672UP Switches and want to monitor them. Monitoring for NX 5600 is not supported in LMS. So we have to check other solutions like DCNM.

I have installed DCNM 6.3 and added one NX 5672UP switch successfully. Inventory, modules, interfaces, everything is fine.

Now I want to test the monitoring and trap / alert forwarding, but it will not work.

1. SMTP server is correct, reports sending correctly to my email address.

2. After clicking "Apply and Test" in "forwarding", nothing happen.

3. If I remove a power supply or fan of the switch, DCNM do not recognize it.

Can someone help me and tell me what I have to do to monitor the switch correctly with alert forwarding?

I tried it with

SNMPv3:

snmp-server user dcnmtest auth md5 Test1234 priv Test1234

snmp-server host 192.zzz.yyy.xxx informs version 3 auth dcnmtest

snmp-server community public ro

SNMP v1

snmp-server host 192.zzz.yyy.xxx traps version 1 test

Thanks and best regards

/Hugo

Hi Hugo,OK, cool.I would then

Hi Hugo,

OK, cool.

I would then assume that the specific traps (regarding the HW you want) is maybe not available. I tried to search on this page for you but for some reason I cannot get the files to see...

http://www.cisco.com/public/sw-center/netmgmt/cmtk/mibs.shtml

Maybe you can have a look. There is a "Traps" section which I assume will have a list of traps currently available.

As an alternative to your problem, can you not use syslog. I am pretty sure that will pick up any event and send to an syslog server. Not what you want but maybe workable...

BTW, are you the Hugo Stiglitz from inglorious bastards? :-)

Hi Hugo,I think maybe you

Hi Hugo,

I think maybe you should enable the traps to be sent as well:

snmp-server enable traps

The snmp-server enable traps CLI command enables both traps and informs, depending on the configured notification host receivers

Try and let us know.

Hi JC, thanks for your answer

Hi JC,

thanks for your answer.

Yes, traps are enabled, see running config:

# show run | i snmp-server

snmp-server source-interface informs Vlan10

snmp user [...]

snmp-server host EXTERNAL PROVIDER traps version 3 priv #####

snmp-server host EXTERNAL PROVIDER traps version 3 priv #####

snmp-server host INTERNAL DCNM traps version 1 test1

snmp-server enable traps callhome event-notify

snmp-server enable traps callhome smtp-send-fail

snmp-server enable traps cfs state-change-notif

snmp-server enable traps cfs merge-failure

snmp-server enable traps aaa server-state-change

snmp-server enable traps upgrade UpgradeOpNotifyOnCompletion

snmp-server enable traps upgrade UpgradeJobStatusNotify

snmp-server enable traps feature-control FeatureOpStatusChange

snmp-server enable traps sysmgr cseFailSwCoreNotifyExtended

snmp-server enable traps config ccmCLIRunningConfigChanged

snmp-server enable traps snmp authentication

snmp-server enable traps link cisco-xcvr-mon-status-chg

snmp-server enable traps vtp notifs

snmp-server enable traps vtp vlandelete

snmp-server enable traps bridge newroot

snmp-server enable traps bridge topologychange

snmp-server enable traps stpx inconsistency

snmp-server enable traps stpx root-inconsistency

snmp-server enable traps stpx loop-inconsistency

snmp-server enable traps poe portonoff

snmp-server enable traps poe pwrusageon

snmp-server enable traps poe pwrusageoff

snmp-server enable traps poe police

snmp-server community test1 group network-operator

snmp-server community test0 group network-admin

snmp-server community test1 use-acl snmp-access

snmp-server community test0 use-acl snmp-access

Hope this helps a little bit.

The EXTERNAL PROVIDER receives traps as Link failures and so on, but no hardware failures.

We want to monitor the switch additionally for link and hardware failures (INTERNAL DCNM).

Ok thanks, I will try that as

Ok thanks, I will try that as workaround.

But it will be nice to know, why DCNM is not checking the traps and is not sending test emails.

BTW, Inglorious bastards is a nice movie and Stiglitz was my favorite character. So I copied it as my nickname in the online world ;) "Say Aufwiedersehen to your N**i-balls" :)

Hi again, we did several

Hi again,

we did several  tests but we get no results.

We test monitoring with DCNM, SCOM or other tools. It seems, NX is sending no traps.

In the NX log, NX is sending traps, but the firewall receives nothing. Is there anyone in the community, how has a Nexus 5600 and monitor it with snmp?

Thanks

Actually I can say, we test

Actually I can say, we test monitoring Nexus with Cisco Prime Infrastructure. This works very well.

We will use Cisco PI instead of DCNM.
