Monitoring the 7500 Series router VIP

Hi,

We have Cisco 7500 series routers. A lot of customers links are connected to the cSTM1-1 interfaces of the router. For this reason I have turned off the link up down trap but I need to know if there was a way I could generate a trap that would indicate that a VIP failure has occured.

Thanks

Imran.

Re: Monitoring the 7500 Series router VIP

Hi,

I don't think setting up a snmp trap to monitor the VIP card is possible.

A workaround you can try is to use syslog instead.

Send the syslog messages from the router to a syslog server and on the syslog server monitor the messages. Once a VIP failure is detected in the messages, the syslog server can send an alert via email.

You may want to check out this program called swatch.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/swatch

Hope this helps ;)

Re: Monitoring the 7500 Series router VIP

Hi,

Appreciate your reply.

Well I had a word with our Cisco Field engineer and the workaround for this is to enable the snmp traps for link up/down and then use the snmp trap filter

snmp ifmib trap throttle

This would only generate traps for the main interface rather than the subinterfaces.
