We have Cisco 7500 series routers. A lot of customers links are connected to the cSTM1-1 interfaces of the router. For this reason I have turned off the link up down trap but I need to know if there was a way I could generate a trap that would indicate that a VIP failure has occured.
I don't think setting up a snmp trap to monitor the VIP card is possible.
A workaround you can try is to use syslog instead.
Send the syslog messages from the router to a syslog server and on the syslog server monitor the messages. Once a VIP failure is detected in the messages, the syslog server can send an alert via email.
