Monitoring throught SNMP.

Hi all,

could someone help me where I should

start to learn about monitoring Cisco devices like switches, routers and PIXs.

I know that every device support some version of SNMP. I know that exists MIBs

and that I can download them. But when I download them how can I work with tham and how should I use them for external monitoring systems?

Thanks a lot for explanation.

Re: Monitoring throught SNMP.

You need software the will compile the MIBs, and constantly listen, and get SNMP data.

No offense to Cisco's CiscoWorks, but you may want to check out OpenNMS:

Have a look at the following links:

ftp://ftp-sj.cisco.com/pub/mibs/app_notes/ --> Look at the mib compilers section

Search for a free utility called GETIF . It is a small SNMP manager that runs under Windows. It is very straightforward to use and it's MIB Browser function will allow you to 'see' the MIB tree and how it all fits together. Good luck.

Re: Monitoring throught SNMP.

Hi all,

thanks for answer.

So if I understand every Cisco device(router, switch) support some set of snmp. Am I right?

And from Cisco I should download MIB file and

past it into my program which I use to search

my device.

Can I influence what my Cisco switch or router

will publish to me ? For example Catalyst 2950.

When I write show snmp mib...what does I see?

Iv found on Cisco that I can download mib files. Does it mean that when I download all files and put it into my MIB browser I will see every info what this mibs give.?
