Hi Waheed,

I don't know what monitoring software you should use. :-)

But why would you want to log all traffic in you LAN/WAN if all you would need know is if a link goes over a threshold?

Anyway, something called netflow is the only thing that can log all traffic without too much overhead.

Consider that a tool that monitors thresholds also checks network device availability.

Combine this with a warning when there are too much errors on a link.

I think you will have 95% of your real needs covered.

Give your "requirements" some more thought.

If you have some money to spend, get resellers to do a proof of concept, on your network.

Cheers,

Michel

Waheed,

You're asking one of the toughest question in IT. Which product to go for. To be honest, their is ocean of details someone may pour over and hence millions of $'s of sale is done by several vendors Marketing teams.

Each NMS application may have one or the other USP over other product. What you have asked for are merely two features:

1. "I need to monitor and log all network traffic transfmiting in my LAN and WAN. "

This may be as simple as installing a syslog server and complex when you want to have that data analysed for some serious insight of data. It may include not a simple syslog, but some complex technologies like Deep Packet inspection, Application Visibility, NetFlow, SPAN etc.

2. "I need to have log-files based on IP-Addresses and Mac-Add of my clients"

This is another feature where you want details of MAC Address to IP Address correlation of your end users/clients. It may be more detailed when you want an insight of what kind of traffic is generated by these clients, like P2P etc.

Apart from this, there may be several other details you want to have when you implement a Network Management software and it will depend on various options like How big is your network Infrastructure, What is the majority of traffic - Voice, Video, Data etc, What kind of Network Devices you have, What topologies? Geographical Presence? How much your organisation is willing to spend? etc.

As Leo advised, form Cisco StandPoint we have our offering as Cisco Prime Infrastructure which is capable of doing what you said on both wireless and wired infrastructure of a Network.

Other NMS application may be available from other Vendors like Solarwinds, HP, Manage Engine, WhatsUpGold, OpenNMS, Paessler etc.. The List is long.
