Possibility of Public IP polling over SNMP

Hi All,

I am using third party PRTG Tool to monitor the bandwidth utilization. Please share your reviews if I can also poll the Firewall (Fortinet) Interface with the help of SNMP over internet.

Topology: ILL is getting terminated on Firewall Interface where a public IP is assigned.

Note: - I don’t have any LL/intranet to do so.

I dont think it should be a problem! There are two concerns on this :

1> Polling permissions.

2> Data security/privacy on public network.

For issue 1, If you configure the FW to allow ports required for SNMP polling (by default 161 and 162) and the protocol properly, there should not be a problem. For issue 2, you can configure SNMP v3 which has proper Privacy and authentication mechanisms under security, to keep the data secure.

Some additional details with different implementation scenarios are present on Paessler's own website covering How to set up traffic monitoring with PRTG for various infrastructures here :

Hope it will be helpful!

-Thanks
