Unfortunately this doesn't seems to be an available option for LMS now. It is not able to do a software check and automate downloads.

Networks now days are very choosy to decide for an upgrade. People pay for Cisco's services like Network Optimization Services (NOS), High Touch Engineers (HTE's) and Advanced Services (AS) which does these recommendation after studying and learning the network, about which upgrade is essential and useful.

Automating download may include a vast number of IOS per platform whether required or not, to your IOS repository.

Software management is very precise in what it is capable of doing and its role in Network Management or LMS. Manually upgrading your devices to the latest software version can be an error-prone, and time-consuming process. To ensure rapid, reliable software upgrades, Software Management automates the steps associated with upgrade planning, scheduling, downloading, and monitoring.

Following is, what it is capable of :

# Set up your Software Management preferences.

# Analyze software upgrades

# Perform In Service Software Upgrade (ISSU)

# Import images into the software repository

# Distribute software images to groups of devices

# Distribute images as patches to group of devices

# Reduce errors by using a recommended image

# Schedule image upgrade jobs

You can schedule a IOS image of your choice to be downloaded once at your preffered timings, but LMS won't do it regularly. Else there would not be a difference of plenty of images available in Cisco.com vs LMS's local repository.
