protocol map of the network

Hi Forum,

Is there a way to collect a statistic of all network devices to see what kind of protocols are being run on the network devices?

I am getting a lot of IPX traffic but I actually do not use IPX.

Thanks much,

paul

SPAN allows you to monitor all the traffic on an Ethernet port. Output this to a unix box running some kind of tool like Ethereal, or ntop.org.

When you say "getting lots of IPX traffic", i'm not sure what you mean. Perhaps you should just do 'no ipx routing"?

Re: protocol map of the network

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the idea. If I do a no ipx routing, it will stop routing from going over other VLAN, but it cannot stop broadcast within the same VLAN right?

the IPX traffic is actually from my printers, but there are PCs that are using unwanted protocols too. How do I scan PCs that use unwanted protocols and turn them off?

Thanks much,

paul
