Setting up VMPS server

What platform can I use for my VMPS server? I have an old 4006, and I'm getting a new 6500. Can either of these be VMPS servers? I was reading documentation and it claimed, "You must have a Catalyst 5000 family switch as the VMPS server to configure dynamic port VLAN membership. all VMPS server configuration must be performed on the Catalyst 5000 family switch." WTF?! IF this is true, why? If not, then what else can I use?

Either of these switches (4006 or 6500) will work as a VMPS server provided they are running CatOS and not CatIOS. See, for example, http://www.cisco.com/en/US/customer/products/hw/switches/ps663/products_configuration_guide_chapter09186a00800d81ac.html for configuring a 4000 series switch for VMPS and http://www.cisco.com/en/US/customer/products/hw/switches/ps708/products_configuration_guide_chapter09186a008022f295.html for the 6500 series.

Unfortunately, the 6500 will be running IOS, and not CatOS. We are attempting to phase out the 4006 with the 6509, so I would like to avoid resorting to using the 4006 as the VMPS server. Are there any alternatives? All other switches are 3550s or 2950s. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks.

We used to seel a VMPS solution called URT, but I believe that has been phased out. You could try openvmps. I'm not sure how active it is anymore.
