I have two identical 4506 switches with regard to IOS 12.2(31)SG, bootstrap 12.2(20r)EW1 and module types in slot 2 of the chassis. While trying to write a scrit to pull the serial and type of each card installed I ran into the following.

(GOOD)

snmpwalk -v2c -c chw14 Host 1 .1.3.6.1.2.1.47.1.1.1.1.11.2000

SNMPv2-SMI::mib-2.47.1.1.1.1.11.2000 = STRING: "JAE10296RAC"

(BAD)

snmpwalk -v2c -c chw14 Host 2 .1.3.6.1.2.1.47.1.1.1.1.11.2000

SNMPv2-SMI::mib-2.47.1.1.1.1.11.2000 = No Such Instance currently exists at this OID

(HOST1)sh mod

<snip>

Mod Ports Card Type Model Serial No.

---+-----+--------------------------------------+------------------+-----------

1 2 Supervisor II+ 1000BaseX (GBIC) WS-X4013+ JAE0948R1JZ

2 48 10/100/1000BaseT (RJ45) WS-X4548-GB-RJ45 JAE10296RAC

(Host2) sho mod

Mod Ports Card Type Model Serial No.

2 48 10/100/1000BaseT (RJ45) WS-X4548-GB-RJ45 JAE10296R9Z

is the index number dynamically created on order of insertion, and why would Host2 sho me slot 2 information with an index of 4000?

Thanks

Yes, the index is obtained dynamically, and there are no rules listed in the MIB as to what this index needs to be. The textual convention states:

"An arbitrary value which uniquely identifies the physical entity. The value should be a small positive integer; index values for different physical entities are not necessarily contiguous."
