SNMP error in different IOS versions

Hi all,

we use in our network Catalyst 3750 (v1 + v2) switches. We are monitoring them with SolarWinds NPM. In the last few month we see regularly syslog-errors like this:

2013-09-18 14:42:15 Local6.Error vcvlswae1-87 8577: 006431: Sep 18 14:42:15: %SNMP-3-INPUT_QFULL_ERR: Packet dropped due to input

2013-09-18 14:42:15 Local6.Error vcvlswae1-87 8578: queue full 2013-09-18 14:42:15 Local6.Error vcvlswae1-87 8577: 006431: Sep 18 14:42:15: %SNMP-3-INPUT_QFULL_ERR: Packet dropped due to input
2013-09-18 14:42:15 Local6.Error vcvlswae1-87 8578: queue full

all the links on the switches look okay at this moment, but no data is going over the connections, so nobody can work on the connected devices.

this happens to switches with IOS 12.2(44)SE6 and 12.2(55)SE1.

only solution we found so far is to reboot the switch. Even a "show tech-support" will not run until we reboot the switch. Is this a known bug in IOS? At the moment we have no idea where this comes from, so every input where to look for the cause is welcome.

Regards,

Matthias

Hi Matthias

%SNMP-3-INPUT_QFULL_ERR: Packet dropped due to input means switch was not able to process received snmp packets (query) and input queue got filled and packets dropped.

There are 2 common reason for this

either NMS is sending very high number of snmp requests to switches which switch is not able to handle

or switches is having high CPU utilization and that's why not processsing input snmp packets and dropping them.

Please check if you are hitting any of condition above.

Thanks

Mahavir

thanks for the quick reply.

1. how can i see the number of SNMP-request a switch receives? i don't think the number is very high because we use only Solarwinds, no other system is sending SNMP-requests to our switches.

2. the max processor load was 32% for the last 24 hours before the switch got problems.

Could it maybe related to the fact that Solarwinds is polling EnergyWise-stats while no EnegryWise-settings are configured on the switch?

thanks

Matthias
