SNMP optimization in Router

Hi,

We have multiple routers in our network where SNMP servers are polling the routers links. The server is polling CPU and link utilization of customers. Now a days we are observing high CPU on the routers due to SNMP. We suspect the servers are requesting lot of other information than it is required. So I would like to have a control in the individual routers on the OID parameters to be polled (as the servers are managed by different team and we dont have a control over that).

So is there anyway in the router to control the OID parameters that it can respond?

Also i would like to know a way to optimize the CPU due to SNMP.

thanks in advance.

regards,

Arun Kumar

Re: SNMP optimization in Router

Here's a link to the Cisco boilerplate on that issue:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk648/tk362/technologies_troubleshooting_procedures09186a00800948e6.shtml

I would sugest as a start creating a snmp view just for the snmp pollers:

ciscorouter(config)# snmp-server community public view lowcpu RO

ciscorouter(config)# snmp-server community myprivate view lowcpu RW

and exclude these items from thier visibility:

ISO root

ciscorouter(config)# snmp-server view lowcpu iso included

Routing and ARP table

ciscorouter(config)# snmp-server view lowcpu 1.3.6.1.2.1.4.21 excluded

ciscorouter(config)# snmp-server view lowcpu 1.3.6.1.2.1.4.22 excluded

ciscorouter(config)# snmp-server view lowcpu 1.3.6.1.2.1.3 excluded

snmpUsmMIB, snmpVacmMIB, snmpCommunityMIB

ciscorouter(config)# snmp-server view lowcpu 1.3.6.1.6.3.15 excluded

ciscorouter(config)# snmp-server view lowcpu 1.3.6.1.6.3.16 excluded

ciscorouter(config)# snmp-server view lowcpu 1.3.6.1.6.3.18 excluded
