I've looked through the online help and cannot find where it shows what strings (RO/RW) are required to perform which function. For example: Is the R/O string used to discover devices or is the R/W string used. Are the Telnet credentials used to archive configs. What is tftp used for...etc.
Is there are list of credentials and their use somewhere?
I do not know if such a list exists. However, as a rule, the read-only credential is used as much as possible. The read-write credential is used only when snmpset operations are required. Therefore, discovery uses the read-only credential. Archiving configs requires an snmpset to trigger the TFTP download, so the read-write credential is used there.
When it comes to whether or not config archive will use telnet or TFTP, that depends on your protocol order configured under RME > Admin > Config Mgmt > Transport Settings.
