SNMP version 3 error on Ciscoview

We upgraded our Cisco 3745 routers from c3745-advipservicesk9-mz.123-14.T7.bin to c3745-advipservicesk9-mz.124-7h.bin due to errors encountered when reloading the router. Problem though is that after the upgrade we cannot access the router on Ciscoview. An error would popup stating snmp version 3 error. The snmp configuration on the router was still the same and we have not changed anything under Device Credentials. The resolution that we had was to downgrade to snmp version 1 and rediscover the device. When Ciscoview is successful, we upgraded it again to version 3 and re-check Ciscoview.

How come we need to downgrade to version 1 and reconfigure again version 3 in order to manage again the device? Is this a bug on Ciscoworks LMS 3.0? Appreciate your feedback on this. Thanks in advance.

Re: SNMP version 3 error on Ciscoview

Without seeing a sniffer trace of the original SNMP traffic which was failing, I cannot say. I have not heard of a bug that would require reconfiguring SNMP on a device. However, if you change the SNMP engineID, all SNMP users would need to be reconfigured to work with the new engineID.

Re: SNMP version 3 error on Ciscoview

Hi Joe,

On what scenario can we do a sniffer trace on the SNMP traffic? Do we have to do again an IOS upgrade and do a sniffer trace at the same time?

Re: SNMP version 3 error on Ciscoview

If you're seeing a failure with CiscoView and any given device. Start a Packet Capture from Device Center > Tools > Packet Capture filtering on UDP port 161 traffic to that device. Then, reproduce the error in CiscoView. The resulting packet capture should help explain why the error is occurring.

If your problem is now fixed, there is no reason to redo the IOS upgrade unless you really want to figure out if there is a reproducible problem.
