When working with Cisco routers, many-a-times we wish to boot the router from a local TFTP server. There can be multiple reasons why we may wish to do so:

  • The flash has no space to store the Cisco IOS system image and the image has been stored on a local TFTP server;
  • The flash has gone bad and cannot be used to store the IOS image;
  • The TFTP server acts a repository for IOSes and all routers access IOSes from the TFTP server.

good friend of mine brought up an interesting question: We know that when a multicast IPv4 packet is encapsulated into an Ethernet frame, the destination MAC address is constructed using the OUI prefix of 01:00:5E and the lowmost 23 bits of the destination IPv4 address are directly copied to the lowmost 23 bits of the destination MAC address (the topmost bit in the 4th MAC octet is set to 0). Now, what will switches and routers as transit devices do if they receive a multicast frame but the destination MAC does not correspond to (is not constructed from) the destination IPv4 address of the packet in the frame? Will they observe the MAC address, or the IP address, or will they do something unexpected? Surely enough, that was an interesting - and not an easy - question to answer, even though such situation should not occur with well-behaved networking software implementations. Read more...

Welcome back — I do hope you enjoyed the earlier pointers I suggested in my previous blog, specifically about visiting the Useful Links page, browsing the User Guide, viewing helpful videos and getting familiar with the Smart Net Total Care community. In today’s posting, I want to show you how to easily tailor the portal for your specific job function. This blog is helpful once you have already both onboarded with Smart Net Total Care and set up a data collection method so your data is now available in the portal. If you have not done the above and are looking to get started with Smart Net Total Care, this blog will guide you. Information overload can be a distraction instead of a value-creation from data. In the Smart Net Total Care portal, we know you want actionable insights. This is why we’ve made it possible for you to customize the views and reports that you see. You can create your own dashboards and customize the contents of the smart reports and this is what I am covering in this post today. Let me first define dashboards and smart reports: - A dashboard is a summarized view of related information presented in a single visual pane-of-glass - A smart report is a grid-based view of detailed information organized by various topics of interest Read more...

Happy New Year!

Looks like this year will be another exciting year, here at Cisco.
Let me begin by congratulating our 2013 Cisco Small Business Support VIP’s, David Trad and Tom Watts. You will notice this VIP badge VIPBadge.pngby their name in the community.

This will be David’s second year as our Small Business Support VIP.  Even with David’s busy schedule, he has continued to help in the community as much as he can.   Our new VIP, Tom Watts, is well known to the community since he was a Cisco Small Business Support Engineer that helped resolve many questions in the community.  Even though Tom has moved on to another company, he has continued to help others in the community.

Thank you David and Tom for all the contributions you have and will continue to provide in the future!

I just have one final note and that is the recent news about Belkin’s acquisition of Cisco’s Linksys Consumer Business unit. There has been some confusion within the community about Cisco Small Business Products being part of Linksys Consumer Business unit.  Let me assure you that the Cisco Small Business Products are not being acquired or part of the acquisition at all. For us it is business as usual.  We will continue to launch exciting and Cisco Small Business products and  be here to support you.

Thank you all for visiting the Small and Medium Business Support Community.  Normally I would be writing about something new within the community.  However for this month, I found a series of blogs from Dave Evans, Cisco Chief Futurist, on Internet of Everything very informative. With October and Halloween coming up, I decided to revisit scary cabling and wiring again this year. So, I scanned the wonderful web again. Just like last year I found several sites that make you wonder what in the world were they thinking. The good news is that some of these stories  found ways to clean up the clutter.

Cable Messes: Want Meatballs with that? from Vibrant Technologies

Cable mess from Jesse R inka from jmrphotos.wordpress.com

Five tips for getting cable clutter under control from TechRepublic is a great article on how to control the cable clutter.

The Network from Into The Weeds Blog

A Doc Photo Album has a good example of a before and afterfrom Carnegie Mellon University – School of Computer Science

http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~jonas/doc/doc_cable_tangle.jpghttp://www.cs.cmu.edu/~jonas/doc/doc_kvm_cables.jpg

Hopefully you found some of these as interesting and informative as I did.

Hello!

This month I would like to introduce you to our interactive troubleshooting tool named Guide Me.

Some of you may have noticed the following Guide Me widget in our Small Business Product support areas:

guide me 4.jpg

Guide me was developed to help users troubleshoot their Cisco Small Business products. Depending on the questions you type, Guide me will determine which one of Guide Me's how to documents are available to help resolve your question. There are currently hundreds of how to documents in the Guide Me knowledge base.

As an example here is a document from Guide Me:

How to Configure Static IP Address for Remote Gateway on RV016,RV042 and RV042G Routers

As seen below, each guide me document provides you with a step by step instruction on how to resolve your question.

config static IP.jpg

Our Guide Me group is continually adding and updating these how to documents.  I recommend you give Guide Me a try and tell us your experience and/or how to improve it.

Well that's all I have for this month.  Until my next blog, have a wonderful September and thank you for using the Small Business Support Community!

Hello!

First congratulations to our June Small Business Spotlight Award recipient, David Wagman. David is relatively new to the Small Business Support Community. However in a short time, he has contributed so much that it is no wonder he is in our number one position in our Small Business Leaderboard.  Thank you David for your contributions and continued support.

Stay tuned as we will be announcing our July Small Business Spotlight Award recipient on August 1st.

Now on to what was new for the month of July.

To enable more customers worldwide to realize the maximum return on their IT investment, Cisco expanded the Small Business Support Service to 17 additional countries. These new countries are the following:

  • Americas: Argentina, Chile, and Colombia
  • Asia: Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.
  • Europe/Middle East/Africa/Russia: Croatia, Egypt, Israel, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Slovakia, South Africa, Turkey, Ukraine, and the United Arab Emirates.

We also updated local language support for the Small Business Support Service. Localized language support is now available in French, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese Mandarin and Cantonese, German, and Russian. Local language support for Arabic, Dutch, and Polish will be discontinued. For all other countries, support is available in English.

The Small Business Support Service is an affordable three-year, subscription service that provides device-level support including:

  • Unlimited telephone and online chat support from the Cisco Small Business Support Center
  • Next-business-day advanced hardware replacement if necessary
  • Advanced configuration and deployment support from Small Business Support Center-certified Cisco engineers

Please go to our Small Business Service and Support by Country to see which service are available in your country.

That is all to report for this month. If you have any questions or ideas on how to improve the Small Business Support Community, please post a comment below this blog. I will respond back either with another comment or private message.
