Two least (known) used best practices - IOS and its variations

  • Increase the logging buffer to 1-5MB depending on how much free mem you have. 25+ years ago, routers typically 2MB DRAM and so, how of it can be assigned for logging buffer was restricted. This is no longer the case. Go ahead and put some of the free memory to use.

  • Configure the devices running IOS to include timestamp for any sh cmd

!

line con 0

exec prompt timestamp

!

line aux 0

exec prompt timestamp

!

line vty 0 4

exec prompt timestamp

!

What does it do?

After this change is made to the config, from hereonwards, anytime a show cmd is issued, the following two lines will be automatically included:

Load for five secs: 0%/0%; one minute: 0%; five minutes: 0%
Time source is hardware calendar, *11:12:07.519 UTC Thu May 30 2002

In any troubleshooting, knowing when you did what is invaluable, when time comes and you have to review the data collected and trace your path through.
