10 Gigabit module for 6500

Hello.

My client ask me about Cisco's roadmap for Catalyst's 6500 10 Gigabit modules.

Currently the maximum module density is 4 ports and we need more.

Please , advise.

Re: 10 Gigabit module for 6500

I had this discussion with 6500 Product Managers at Cisco.

The answers I received were this:

* 8-port 10GE modules will be available soon (Q2 06?)for 6500-E chassis with Sup720.

* 16-port 10GE modules will likely be available pending the release of Supervisor 1440 sometime in 07.

Hope this helps.

Re: 10 Gigabit module for 6500

Dimitry,

Cisco's Q & A on 6500 series 10Ge (http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps708/products_qanda_item09186a0080092399.shtml) is a good starting point.

There is a whitepaper on 10 Gigabit Ethernet Switching For Enterprises for the 6500 Series switches here: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps708/products_white_paper0900aecd802a648b.shtml. You may also want to look at the whitepaper on Metro Ethernet Technology on Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Switch (http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps708/products_white_paper09186a00801f1cc3.shtml).

As far as module density and capcity is concerned, browse through the 6500 series models comparison (http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps708/prod_models_comparison.html) then the following pages on the various 10Ge modules:http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/modules/ps4835/products_data_sheet09186a00801dce34.html, http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/modules/ps4835/products_data_sheet09186a008007cd00.html.

Cheers,

Josef.

Re: 10 Gigabit module for 6500

Hello, Josef.

Thanks for your response, but its not exactly what I need . I have seen all that information before, what I need is Cisco's future 10 Gigabit products(roadmap) ,especially 6500's modules with more than four 10Gigabit ports.

Re: 10 Gigabit module for 6500

I misunderstood your question: with regard to when 10Ge mods with greater than 4 ports will be out - I don't know.

What are your client's concerns? Bandwidth? Speed? Redundancy?

Josef.

Cisco futures (roadmap information) can be made available by your account manager in coordination with the appropriate product manager(s) at Cisco corporate.

When such information is provided, it is on a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) basis and it would not be appropriate to post or repost it on a forum such as this.

Re: 10 Gigabit module for 6500

Maybe you can provide me some information (url) about signal degradation on 10Ge network - how each component ( Gbic , patch panel) reduce the signal strengh.

Thanks.

Re: 10 Gigabit module for 6500

back to your original question about more than 4-port 10GE module on cat6500:

I don't think it's possible with current switch fabric (45Gbps with sup720) unless it's deisgned to be oversubscribed. (note some doc says it's 90Gbps full duplex).

with sup1440, maybe there is 8-port 10GE at 100% of line rate. oversubscription is a different story.
