Mismatched Fiber Diameters

We have been reading that there are two different sized fiber optic cables. One with 50 microns diameter and one with 62.5 microns. Does it matter if the run is one diameter and the patch cords are another?

Is one diameter more applicable to a certain usage than another?

I am not well versed in fiber specifics so any help or comment is appreciated.

It is not recommended to mix 50 micron and 62.5 micron fibers as this will result in a mismatched fiber core and loss of light.

The attached document provides a brief overview of fiber cable.
