Need Help to Send Generic Synchronous Data Over OC-48 SONET

We are looking into an application to allow transfer of a high rate synchronous data stream over a SONET network. We have a data stream (up to 2 Gbps) that we would like to format to fill out an OC-48 link. We are trying to determine if this is possible and what kind of off the shelf products may be available to perform this task before looking into a custom approach. We believe that we will need to provide a custom design to convert the synchronous data stream into an interface format compatible with the off the shelf hardware. We have been trying to determine if the use of GFP processing coupled with a SONET framer would provide a suitable approach.

The received data at the destination node may not need to be synchronous (recovered with the exact same clock as transmitted) but will need to provide an indication of valid payload data. We are looking for helpful suggestions.

Thanks.

What is the signal type? There are transponder/muxponder cards that may be able to package the signal into an OC-48 and be transported on an STS-48c circuit.

As for the received synchronous signal, Stratum 1 timing may be good enough. Otherwise, a dark fiber solution using line timing may better synchronize the transport nodes.
