Question on EWDM - Damage exposure to X2 over short testing distance

I have 2 EWDM muxes in a lab and would like to set up a test connection over X2-10 GBics. I have 10 db attenuators which I could connect on RX end or on both both the TX & RX ends avoid any damage.

Question: Due to the distance being short, could this damage the X2-GBICS due to the laser strength? I would like to test the EWDMs and the X2 GBICs before deploying this in production.

The X2-DWDM receiver's damage threshold is -1dBm.

The X2-DWDM max transmit power is +3dBm (min -1dBm)

The EWDM-MUX-8 combined Mux/Demux DWDM (same channel) insertion loss is 4.7dB.

+3 - 4.7 = -1.7dBm optical receive power (worst case)

So you shouldn't damage the X2-DWDM's receiver.

BUT, the X2-DWDM module's maximum "operating" optical input power is -7. So, you should install the 10dB attenuator to make sure that your optical input signal is within the operating range of the X2-module.  Otherwise, you may have a high bit-error ratio on the link due to overloading of the optical receiver. 

You could install the attenuators between the two EWDM-MUX-8 filters as well.
