Single mode transmission over MMF

Does the 10Gigabit Ehternet over multimode fiber (mode conversion cables, etc.) protocol support fiber runs in excess of 2km?

Does Cisco have a postion on its hardware and MMF lengths?

Has anyone tested this orknow of a paper on the subject?

Single mode transmission over MMF

Leolaohoo provided Cisco's current support for 10G over MMF.

Just for interesting reading, the attached Lightwave article discusses what will be necessary to improve the link lengths of MMF.  Unfortunately, the are discussing improvements in MMF geometry and the transceivers; so it would require new MMF. I think they should be able to improve the reach over legacy MMF using coherent technologies; currently being deployed for long-haul SMF networks; but the equipment cost will be prohibitive for some time to come.

Whats ahead for multimode fiber - Lightwave Article

You will need to plan now for SMF in backbones, especially as you move to 40G/100G (and beyond).
