SM port pluging into a MM port

Hello,

we have an c7200 with a PA-A3-STM1MM port that connects through a

MM fiber (includes an attenuator to adjust the level of power) against a Alcatel system SM port. The point is that the frequently c7200 port of the ATM

suffered falls and locks, to the point that we must unlock it manually

through a shutdown and no shutdown command. We would like to know if it's locks

port may be due to this configuration, not very standard.

I've had a previous bad experience trying to interconnect a singlemode interface over multimode fiber to a multimode interface. The link was not stable. We improved it by securing the interconnecting cable so that they would not move. But, this type of interconnection is not recommended. The end points of a fiber link should match and use the correct fiber type.

If the interface ports are fixed on your equipment (not pluggable optics), you may want to experiment with an OC3 media converter product (link provided below) to convert from SM to MM and vise-sersa. I have no experience with these units. It will introduce another potential failure point.
