Let me verify my understanding. In 2.4.6 Unity writes directly to Exchange. So if exchange is down, no voice mail. In 3.x Unity uses SQL to communicate to the Exchange server, so if Exchange is down users can still leave messages and they are held on the unity server? Can users retrieve the messages via phone just not via exchange? Or are they held and unreachable till excahnge recovers?

Voice messages left while Exchange is down are stored locally on the Unity server in the UMR ("ooh-mer" - Unity Messaging Repository). Unity will continue to try and contact the Exchange server to delivery these messages and while that's not possible we're in "UMR-mode" which means calls can access those voice messages waiting in the local queue over the phone but nothing else (of course... we can't get at the Exchange inbox to get your other messages). As long as Unity remains in UMR-mode messages are left for subscribers and can be retrieved over the phone in the limited "UMR mode" conversation which doesn't allow message forwarding, replies etc...
