AD Schema changes

We are going to be installing Unity 3.x early next week in an Exchange 2000 environment. We've read several docs and reviewed the schema attribute changes (LDF doc) that are being made. One question I have...can we roll the schema updates out (both for testing and after hrs AD replication issues) ahead of time? (similar to Exchange schema changes that can be made in advance). <br><br>Also, for Unity 3.x you do not require Exchange on the Unity server? You do mention that you need some type of data store (ie - SQL or MSDE) on the Unity server. What method are you recommending? Staying w/ Exchange in this envirn may make more sense since they don't have a current SQL envirn.<br><br>Let me know your thoughts!<br><br>Thanks,<br>Rob<br><br>

As far as the schema changes go, it is totally separate from the install. Just run the ADSchemaSetup.exe and wait for replication to occur. You only need to run it once in the forest of course.

Unity 3.0 requires SQL or MSDE on the machine. Unity 3.0 ships with SQL or MSDE or both. Exchange is completely optional. If you chose to run Exchange 2000 off box you will need to install the Management Tools on the Unity 3.0 machine. But that is all in the install notes.

Both Exchange 5.5 and 2000 can be off box hovever Exchange administrator for 5.5 or Exchange System Manager for E2K has to be installed on the Unity box.

SQL or MSDE has to be on the Unity box also as Keith said.

Keith,

I have a question along similar lines. We have an exchange setup spanning different countries and different domains but all using the same AD. We have already installed Unity in one site, so the forest has been updated. We are going to be installing another Unity system at another site which is in another domain, will we need to run the Schema update again ? Personally don't think we have to.

No, you don't need to reapply the extensions if you're installing another Unity into the same forrest. Be sure to check the release notes, though, if you're installing a newer version of Unity. A few additional properties got added to the schema along the way - particularly if you're going to be using AMIS or the Cisco Unity Bridge (for talking to OctelNet networks).
