ata 186 in Fax mode stops after four pages

I have a ccm 3.1 system, with an ATA186 attached did all the setup for a fax works ok. On a good day I tried to send a Fax of 12 pages, each time it stops at page 4 or 5. Does anyone have ay idea of waht can be causing this and how to fix it.

Hi

...and I bet if you have "more complex" pages (pictures) not even this # of pages get through.

Here some hints:

- look for LAN issues (duplex mismatch, switchport=access, ...)

- take the newest ATA SW

- there are early ATAs around which are not "fax enhanced".

- Play with different IOS images on the PSTN gateways. We had some problems with the PSTN gateway and always looked at the ATA.

Fax with VoIP can be very frustrating...

Anyway, good luck,

Re: ata 186 in Fax mode stops after four pages

The current ATA supports only fax pass-through which could be very tricky to keep this connection up and running on top G.711 (must codec) for that period of time without missing a packet or two and non changeable delay.

In fax transmission, is enough you have the slightest fluctuation that the pass-through connection base on G.711 will be dropped.

Fax transmission couldn't be guaranteed on public internet till the ATA will support T.38

We had the same problems at our customer installation, but now it works fine.

In our case the solution was to insert:

fax rate disable

in all dial-peers on the Gateway-Router.

Re: ata 186 in Fax mode stops after four pages

This previous message includes the correct first procedure to do:

IN all dial--peers in CIsco routers that may communicate with the ATA for faxing:

Insert this:

fax rate disable

This tells the router to use fax-passthru instead of fax-relay.

The ATA 186 can only do fax-passthru, not fax-relay.

The above procedure facilitates the ATA to do fax-passthru.
