Bandwidth per call for G711

jnchoy

Read from Cisco doc that G711 call is about 83kbps for the default payload. However, made some measurements on test network using a bandwidth measurement equipment and the bandwidth actually fluctuates from 70kbps to 200kbps. Why is that so.

Configuration on source and destination gateway has been set with the

Codec g711alaw bytes 160 command. Can someone advise why such behaviour is seen?

I would be interested to see your findings. If you're not using VAD, then we should be sending RTP packets once per fixed interval. The fixed interval is determined by the payload size. So, first, there should be no fluctuation in the data rate, unless there is significant jitter in your network.

further, the 80Kbps is for the IP payload, and does not include any layer 2 overhead.

What is the test you're running?

Regards,

Clay
