I'm not sure if this will help, but when I was having authentication problems, I fired up ethereal on the services box, set the filter to http and had a look at what was really going on.
Other than that, the obvious workaround would be to have the script first return a menu, where the user enters login & password, and which is submitted to the server. That will put the authentication into your script, so you have to be careful that users don't trick the script.
