Call Manger Time Sync

I have a cucm lab which include a cucm, router and switch.

Router is the ntp master and switch was able to sync up with it (phones registered to router have proper time too).

But cucm doesn't seems to sync up with ntp source. ntp reference was configured with proper ip.

Could you please help how to troubleshoot?

Re: Call Manger Time Sync

Hi smallrain,

What's the version of CUCM??What's the status of the NTP on the CUCM OS page.

Make sure you are able to ping the router from CUCM.

You can try rebooting the publisher to make sure the server synchs with the router.Seen several times that after rebooting the servers on the cluster the time goes in synch.

If you are using Unified Communications Manager here are the steps to configure NTP:

Here are the steps on how to configure NTP servers:

NTP Servers
Ensure that external NTP server is stratum 9 or higher (1-9). To add, delete, or modify an
external NTP server, follow this procedure:

Note : You can only configure the NTP server settings on the first node or publisher.

1. From the Cisco Unified Communications Operating System Administration window, navigate
to Settings>NTP Servers.
The NTP Server Settings window displays.

2. You can add, delete, or modify an NTP server:
- To delete an NTP server, check the check box in front of the appropriate server and
click Delete.
- To add an NTP server, click Add, enter the hostname or IP address, and then click Save.
- To modify an NTP server, click the IP address, modify the hostname or IP address, and
then click Save.

Note : Any change you make to the NTP servers can take up to five minutes to complete.
Whenever you make any change to the NTP servers, you must refresh the window to display
the correct status.

3. To refresh the NTP Server Settings window and display the correct status, choose
Note : After deleting, modifying, or adding NTP server, you must restart all the other
nodes in the cluster for the changes to take affect.

Now, if everything seems to be fine you can also try running through CLI the next command to check the status and config:

utils ntp config
utils ntp status

Re: Call Manger Time Sync

utils ntp status is synchronized to local stratum 11.

didn't see ntp server (router) under remote column. there was local address only

utils ntp config says syncronized to it hardware clock.

Re: Call Manger Time Sync

Thanks for the update. From the utils ntp status it's stating that the Callmanager is using its own clock and that's why we are not getting the correct time.

Try deleting the ntp entry from the OS admin page. Reboot the server and enter again the Router IP address as the NTP reference. Reboot the server again and ran the commands again.

If indeed is synchronized with the router when you run the utils ntp status you should get and output similar to the next one:

admin:utils ntp config

This node is configured to synchronize with one of the following NTP

You can also give it a try by stopping and restarting the NTP service from CLI after making the changes with:

utils ntp stop

utils ntp start

and see if it makes a difference.

Don't know what version of Unified Communications Manager you are using but make sure you are using NTPv4 since CUCM is compatible with this version and you might be hitting: CSCsw17043

Re: Call Manger Time Sync

Thanks for your reply. But I was away and didn't have a chance to test it.

What is difference between web-interface vs. CLI-os-admin config?

Re: Call Manger Time Sync

The config is made in web or initial install, but with CLI you will have a more detailed output for troubleshooting and the option to stop and start the ntp service.
