Can IP Phone 9971 support skype? If so how to configure?

I can see on the web some third party applications like SkyStone Video supporting Skype on the phone.

Does the 9971/9951 phones support natively or with CUCM support skype?

  • Can the Cisco 9951/9971 phones be used in a fully Standalone scenario with Skype? i.e. with the phones not being registered on UCM, can they be used with a Skype account to make/received calls over the Internet? Is there a website link that details this step by step?
  • Can Skype calls be made from a soft client (laptop etc) from/to 9951/9971 phones, with the phones being registered on UCM?

Thanks in advance.

No, the phone cannot interact with Skype natively. The SkyStone gateway acts as a transcoder between H.264 AVC (what the 9971 uses for video) and the proprietary Skype video codec. You use it to associate the numeric DN of the phone on CUCM to an equivalent Skype handle.

The closest CUCM can get to Skype without an transcoding device similar to SkyStone is the audio-only Skype Connect SIP gateway. Even then, CUCM would need a CUBE or SBC in the DMZ to intermediate between the internal network and the public ITSP.
