Can two ata186s be used to extend a small phone system?
The requirements are as follows:
Main office has Panasonic KXT1232 box (hybrid) with spare extensions and COs would like to extend one or two extensions to a remote office via hi-speed private intranet connection. The remote office will not any POTS. All incoming & outgoing calls would be handled by the Panasonic switch.
I have read that people have used Cisco ATA186 units but it is not clear if the unit will work on the extension of the KXT. It looks like it would work on a CO port but then the remote office would not be able to make outgoing calls, not to mention transfering incoming calls would be more of a hassle.
Re: Can two ata186s be used to extend a small phone system?
As a CallManager controlled device, the ATA-186 can be extended remotely to support key systems. CLID and CNAME are also extended to the Key System if supported by the Key System manufacture. I use the ATA-186's at small remote offices and at home.
If you are not looking at Call Manager for this solution, then any voice equipped Cisco router can be used to establish an FXO to FXS "extender" like capability. This would extend over IP your "Panasonic" dial tone to the remote office. The ATA-186 would not be used in this case.
