Hi

I have a customer that would like to be able to delete old voice mails from users' mailboxes. Is there an Unity specific way of doing this or can we use the clean mailbox Exchange utility? It is a voicemail only installation.

Thanks.

Unity doesn't tread into the land of automatically deleting messages out of a shared store at this point. We've discussed it being an optional item that we can turn on and the like but the danger introduced always outweighs the benefits.

There are, however, nifty tools in Exchange you can use to get this functionality, the best of which is mailbox manager. In Exchange 5.5 this is an add on introduced into SP3, in Exchange 2000 it's built into the main product. This guy lets you decide what messages to delete based on a robust set of rules/conditions. It can also be used to send out reports to multiple folks indicating who is using what kind of message store space or which messages will be deleted (i.e. giving the admin the chance to approve) or send out warnings to owners of messages that will be automatically removed etc... lots of functionality in here and you can easily set it up to delete voice mail messages based on age (use the message class IPM.Note.Voice.Unity as your filter).

Here's a post on the forum about it:

We have Exchange 5.5 SP4 and under the Tools menu in Exchange Administrator, there is an option to 'Clean mailbox...' - does this do the same thing? There are quite a few options there as well, if this works, what options are suggested?

it's not really the same thing... there isn't the same type of aging control and the like in there. I've only ever used that option when I'm cleaning one of my test systems off after a load test or something where I don't care about all the messages being waxed so I really couldn't reccomend any settings for you.

just proceed with caution...

Thanks - I'm not so concerned with aging out particular messages - I want to delete all voicemail from a users mailbox. If I select a user (or multiple users), then select:

messages older than 0 days
both read and unread items
email messages
delete items immediately

Will this accomplish the task?
