the only negative impact is that you have to do the ip addressing of the phone manually and it cannot be managed by dhcp (unless u created a reservation to be used as a static). no other negative impact than that.

the way to setup the ip phone for static ip is as follows:

(depending on the phone type; 7960 steps shown below)

1) press the 'settings' button on the phone

2) choose 'network configuration'

3) scroll down to 'alternate TFTP' and press **# to unlock the setting

4) press the 'yes' softkey and then the 'save' softkey

(the phone will begin to reset)

5) press the 'settings' button and then choose the 'network configuration' option

6) scroll down to 'tftp server 1'

7) press **# to unlock the setting and choose the 'edit' softkey

8) enter the ip address for the tftp server to be used then press the 'validate' softkey; then press the 'save' softkey

(the phone will begin to reset)

9) press the 'settings' button and then choose the 'network configuration' option

10) scroll down to the 'dhcp enabled' setting and press **# to unlock the setting

11) press the 'no' softkey and then the 'save' softkey

(the phone will begin to reset)

12) press the 'settings' button then choose the 'network configuration' option

13) scroll down to the 'ip address' setting and press **# to unlock the setting

14) press the 'edit' softkey and enter the ip address you wish to you, then press the 'validate' softkey and then the 'save' softkey

15) scroll down to the 'subnet mask' setting and press the 'edit' softkey

16) enter the subnet mask to be used and press the 'save' softkey

17) scroll down to the 'default router 1' setting and press the 'edit' softkey

18) enter the default router to be used and press the 'save' softkey

at this point, you have all required fields manually set and the phone should be able to boot up completely and get its load from the TFTP server and register to call manager.

again, the fields required to setup a static ip are as follows:

* alternate tftp = yes

* tftp server 1 = 'tftp ip addy'

* dhcp enabled = no

* ip address = 'ip addy'

* subnet mask = 'subnet mask'

* default router 1 = 'default router ip addy'

(during the few phone resets, you do not have to wait until the reset is completed, you can move on to the next step as soon as the phone allows it; usually just a few seconds)

thank you gpulos for detailed and good explaination.
