CTI is the ability to have call manager interact/call process on behalf of an application.
(a CTI device is a 'virtual' device/DN that can answer/handle multiple simultaneous calls)
an example would be a broadcasting application that has the ability to send broadcasts/text to ccm ip phones.
the application would use CTI devices on call manager such as a CTI Route Point (DN) so when a call was placed to the (DN/ctiRP), call manager would interact with and hand off the call to the application. the application would then perform its broadcasting functions to the phones.
another good example of CTI use is an IP Call Center. same use of CTI where the call(s) are handed off to the call center application.
