I have an executive that, for some reason, would like to have his new messages played back differently. Currently, Unity plays oldest UNPLAYED message first and newest UNPLAYED message last. Currently it's not possible to customize the playback order of your messages in your inbox. We have a spec in place for how to go about this and it's bundled into a new feature called "Flex Stack". It's execute committed for 3.2 later this year (it'll probably be called 4.0 when it hits the streets).
This will add a 4th stack (you'll have voice mail, email, fax and recipeits now) and you can dictate the order (urgent, non urgent, read, unread) for each stack indvidually as well as having some other options to jump around between stacks directly. Should fit the bill here.
